The Judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit appoint bankruptcy judges for both Oregon and Washington. The court uses a merit selection process for the initial appointment and for reappointments. Bankruptcy judges serve a renewable fourteen year term.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Oregon is authorized five bankruptcy judges. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Western Washington is also authorized for five bankruptcy judges.
