Since the enactment of the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act in 2005, bankruptcy filers have been forced to obtain a credit counseling certificate prior to filing their petitions with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. It has been nearly seven years and a thousand clients later and I have yet to hear of anyone getting anything out of this requirement. I am pleased to report that at least one thing about credit counseling has finally gotten better, the price!

Up until recently, the going rate for credit counseling was somewhere between thirty and fifty dollars. Thankfully, the Tides Center has opted to offer consumer counseling for five bucks. Better yet, the Tides Center is an approved provider for credit counseling in both Oregon and Washington.
